Mamoura British Academy in Abu Dhabi is home to over 1,100 students and a wide variety of languages, with more than 50 home languages represented across the school community, including various Arabic dialects, which are considered regional variations rather than separate languages. With such linguistic diversity, the need for structured, evidence-based EAL support is vital.
EAL Leader and Head of English (Primary), Kate Fletcher, led the roll-out of FlashAcademy® to support multilingual learners with targeted interventions and the outcomes demonstrated in the first seven months were remarkable. Kate has seen strong engagement from her learners since day one…
With 30 students actively using the platform:
- 1,685 lessons were completed
- Over 9,000 words were learned
- 45.5 average lessons completed per student, per week, many accessed independently
Students demonstrated consistent use beyond the classroom—engaging with FlashAcademy® during school holidays and showing genuine ownership over their learning journey.
Data-led insights driving real change
Using FlashAcademy®’s digital assessments, Mamoura British Academy carried out termly tracking to measure progress in listening, reading and writing. Key findings included:
- 23 students moved from Band A to B on the Bell Foundation scale
- 70% of new-to-English learners improved in reading
- Notable gains across listening, with 46 instances of skill progression, and 10 learners jumping four full bands in reading
Kate also cross-referenced these insights with internal reading and phonics assessments, reinforcing the reliability of the data.
“We loved seeing that even though our learners were still developing curriculum-level skills, they were making real progress in language acquisition. That’s hugely motivational for students and parents alike.”
A whole-school journey ahead
With such positive impact seen in a short time, Mamoura’s next step is to expand FlashAcademy® across the wider teaching team. The aim? To build a consistent, data-informed approach to support every EAL learner from day one.
