Established in 1895, A.H. Worth is one of the UK’s leading fresh produce businesses and the UK’s biggest cavolo nero grower. They use Leap to support English language learning across their multilingual teams.
The challenge: supporting English learning across a 24/7, multilingual workforce
A.H. Worth produces cavolo nero, kale, spinach, potatoes, and leeks for retail, foodservice, wholesale & food manufacturing across the UK. Its production site runs around the clock, across four shifts, with a workforce speaking more than ten different languages between them.
Supporting English language development across a team like this can be challenging for managers. Before Leap, A.H. Worth leaned on in-person tutoring and informal translation support from bilingual colleagues, which meant pulling people away from their own roles to interpret during assessments and day-to-day communication. Group classes couldn’t accommodate the mix of languages and while online basic translation tools helped colleagues get through a conversation, they weren’t building lasting language skills.
A Training Coordinator, who works closely with the shop floor teams, explains the impact this had on their productivity and the hidden cost incurred:
“If I’m having to do an assessment on somebody who’s struggling with English, we have to take an extra person out of the business for translation. Say an assessment takes 15 minutes, because you need two people for that, it’s really 30 minutes of paid time. Across a series of assessments, that adds up to real cost.”

Why A.H. Worth chose Leap
For a site running four shifts, seven days a week, flexibility was non-negotiable. Leap works on any device and at any time, meaning staff can fit English learning around their working pattern.
“It was the main reason we chose the app, that it would be accessible any time. We’re a busy, challenging environment, so we’re giving our colleagues the chance to learn exactly when they have free time, even on a tea break.”

Rolling Leap out across a 24/7 operation
A.H. Worth gave their staff a choice to sign up to Leap. Staff opted in, with a light-touch minimum of logging in once a week for around 20 minutes. This supported the varied schedules of their people at work without demanding commitment outside of work. Several practical steps helped drive sign-ups and keep engagement high across the site:
- Staff buy-in: a staff survey showed a clear preference for app-based learning to fit around the working day. Acting on this feedback led to smoother adoption.
- Tailored support: Support was shaped around each shift’s reality, with extra help for colleagues fitting learning in at home.
- Regular check ins: department leads discussed Leap and how to support staff. This helped identify any engagement dips and the best way to support their teams.
- New training landed better: as working at heights training rolled out, colleagues who had been learning with Leap understood it on a different level to before.
The results
Less time and cost lost to translation
Every assessment that needed an interpreter used to take two people’s paid time. By reducing how often a bilingual colleague is pulled away from their own role, Leap is helping A.H. Worth cut the time and cost lost to assessments and day-to-day interpreting.
Growing confidence on the shop floor
The Training Coordinator has noticed a clear shift in how the most engaged learners communicate at work — particularly during assessments and when dealing with visitors or auditors.
More conversation on the lines
English-speaking and multilingual colleagues now communicate more when working together — from coordinating the line before breaks to chatting during them.
Safety-critical training that lands
Staff who had been learning with Leap took on new site training, such as working at heights, with a noticeably deeper understanding than before — a difference that matters most where the training is safety-critical.
A more inclusive way to learn
Group tutoring couldn’t accommodate the site’s mix of languages, and translation apps only helped people get by. Leap gives every learner a route to progress at their own level, whatever their home language.
Simple to manage across multiple shifts
With reporting to track progress and a daily morning meeting routine to flag who needs support, A.H. Worth has folded Leap into the existing rhythm of the site — no extra meetings, no added administrative burden.
Measurable progress across the site
Since launching in January 2025, colleagues have completed around 2,300 Leap lessons and learned almost 12,000 English words between them. The site’s most engaged learner has completed more than 600 lessons in 18 months, progressing from beginner lessons through to intermediate-level content, learning over 3,200 English words along the way.
For A.H. Worth, the real value of Leap goes beyond building staff confidence to empowering teams to thrive, driving productivity and high-quality outcomes across the site:
“You can notice the difference with the people who’ve been pushing themselves on the app. When you go out on the shop floor to do an assessment, they’re much more receptive — you can tell by their body language. There’s an air of confidence that comes with it.”
