Why EAL Futures matters
With increasing numbers of learners speaking multiple languages in the classroom, good EAL and multilingual support is more important than ever. English language proficiency is crucial to attainment and long-term life opportunities for EAL learners. Yet support for multilingual learners varies widely across schools with differing approaches to assessment and intervention. EAL Futures exists to change that.
- More than 1 in 5 pupils in England speak a home language other than English, rising to 44% in London. Some schools support 40-60 different languages.
- English language proficiency is closely linked to attainment – and to wider life outcomes including employment, health and housing.
- 7.4 million students attend international schools worldwide with enrolment up by 45% since 2015.
EAL Futures 2026: A year of collective action
We’ll be bringing together voices from across the sector with a key theme each month through webinars, events, content and resources to help you shape strong EAL provision and support for multilingual learners.
